Our journey through Japan begins among ponds full of extraordinary Koi: first negotiations, first choices, and already great emotions.

October 24, 2018 – Let's go!

Our Japanese adventure dedicated to the selection of Koi aged 2, 3, 4 years and older began on October 24, 2018. Ten days in which we will tell you, stage by stage, about curiosities and encounters on the farms of Niigata.

Yamazaki – First laps, first emotions

As soon as we arrived at Yamazaki we were struck by two 30-45 cm tanks of nisai , rich in variety and quality. After a long negotiation with our hospitable host we managed to select around thirty specimens. Here are my favorites:

Myatora – An unexpected pearl

"That's enough for today," I say to myself as I cross the threshold of Myatora . The prices in the pools in the foreground are prohibitive, but behind it lies a real spectacle: I am buying a single Koi, of quality that you can judge with your own eyes.

A rainy day among the farms

We wake up to a light drizzle, but the desire for new Koi is not lacking. First stop from Marudo , undisputed master, where we select a box of Gosanke nisai of the highest quality and a beautiful Benigoi . The other Koi remain reserved for customers, but here is a splendid Showa and the chosen Benigoi:

The farms of Marujo , Papa Hirasawa , Isa and Torazo do not have any surprises in store for us, but from a breeder specialized in Goromo we find really interesting nisai .

In the afternoon we return to Marusei . I manage to please a customer with a splendid Mukashi and chose a Benigoi over 65 cm (forgive the dimly lit photo).

Finally the good weather! We take advantage of it to take some panoramic photos before fall into temptation again by Ofuchi and Takahashi .

The days go by quickly and now we have found all the Koi we needed. Here they are, ready to be admired:

Kansuke – The Tancho Goshiki of dreams

On the last day in Niigata, there is still a Tancho Goshiki missing. After several attempts, Kansuke gives us the missing gem. Mission accomplished... with a couple of irresistible extras!
